Bradford Brawl was one of the most incredible events the breakin community of Bradford, has seen in recent years. Due to the lockdowns and general closures, our public events and community gatherings took a major hit but our community, in true hip hop fashion went back underground. This was the first Bradford Brawl event to happen again since 2019 and marked the return of the grassroots hip hop event. Bboys and bgirls from the city gather together to battle and showcase their skills, creativity and style, to friends, family and our local audiences.

We ran the Tech Styles Local event back in 2021 and this was a great event but involved the wider scene and attracted many people from across the UK, but in contrast The Bradford Brawl event really put us to the test, as it was a straight measure of the Bradford scene alone. This event would indicate to us the health and status of Bradford’s dancers and breakin community as a whole. We were uplifted and overwhelmed by how amazing the event was, it exceeded our expectations and it was a truly incredible experience to see the heart and passion of Bradford’s bboys and bgirls, plus all their supporting friends and families who attended and brought their energy and encouragement to the event.

Thank God we were truly amazed by how strong our scene remained over the years. A massive thank you to partner organisations, Kala Sangam, Bradford Council and Tranquil Productions. We must also thank 3E Productions, Marek (Sound Tech), Luke Hogan (Video – Tranquil Productions), Clean North Crew for assistance with the jams and thank you also to Karol Wyszynski for some of the photos from the event. Big up to our guest judge Bboy El Uno representing and to Bgirl Fox and Bboy Stylez for supporting the event as judges.

Clean North Showcase

The internationally renowned bboy, Marius came and led a workshop in the morning to help bring some international flava to the day and create some inspiration to kick start the day before the battles. We are always thankful to have opportunity to share in his passion, techniques and enthusiasm within our events, he is a great influence on the UK scene and a leader of the dance, this can be seen through his practice and his attitude. He remarked on how strong and healthy the Bradford scene was looking and this was a major encouragement to the Tech Styles Team and Tranquil Productions.  We always have strong faith and believe in the work we do but it is always appreciated to hear positive views of our breakin scene, culture and city.

The event had 5 crews from Bradford; Clean North (City Wide), West Side Breakers (West Bowling), Industrial Techniques, Concrete Roses (City) and Bradford City Breakers (City). The battles were full of energy and everyone brought their A game, it was clear to see everyone wanted to make a strong impression. The event held crew showcases, crew battles, 2v2 and one of the biggest highlights of the day, Breaker of the Year. The winner of the Crew battle was the newly formed crew Concrete Roses, they smashed the event bringing a really strong presence, especially for their first event as a crew. Dexy and Orlaigh also represent Concrete Roses and took the 2v2 in style showing their experience and composure throughout the battles. It was a full Concrete Roses final as they battled team crew mates, Jozef and Milo but they managed to show the extra detail and heart the judges were looking for. Concrete Roses train on Saturdays at Kala Sangam and they have been going for just over a year, it just shows what can be achieved in a short space of time. One of the main battle highlights was the Breaker of the Year battles and they were soo hype. Over the space of a year, 8 Breaker of the Month titles were awarded and we celebrated these dancers for their hard work and dedication. To read more about the specific breakers within the Breaker of the Year battles, please check out the blog post. It was really nail biting stuff and it was hard to say who would win. It is very hard to battle dancers you regularly train with and know, so each dancer had to also have a strong mentality to match the skills to win the title. The final saw Spider against bgirl Ammo, and it was electric, they inspired everyone in the room with their confidence and swag. They both put it all on the floor but there can only be one! And that was Bgirl Spider!!! She covered all the bases and it was clear to see her hunger to win the title. The room erupted with cheers and it was an amazing moment to see Spider take her place as Breaker of the Year and join the ranks of Bgirl Fox, Labyrinth and Stylez who have all previously won the title.
