Clean North had one of the most incredible weekends they have had as a crew in recent years. As part of the R&D for the creation of theatre, Tech Styles International brought the bboys and bgirls from Bradford’s premier breakin crew to Blackpool to experience the amazing theatre show out of Sadler’s Wells, ‘Breakin Convention’. This took place at the Grand Theatre and had an all-star cast with some of the best dancers in the world, showcasing their skills and artforms.

The world-renowned, Ghetto Funk collective were incredible and their energy could be felt throughout the whole room, the inspiration they brought and their presence on stage was taken to another level. They received a standing ovation and this has to be one of the most uplifting shows we have seen. As part of the touring group for 2023, they were also joined by Mover from South Korea and the amazing solo artist Yvonne Smink from the Netherlands. South Korean breakers are known to have top level breaking skills amongst the dancers in the world and this showcase really displayed their strength, flexibility and precision in the dance. Yvonee Smink has to be one of the strongest and mobile dancers that we have seen to date, her body was chiselled and her control left the audiences in awe, it was inspiring to see such strength displayed live on stage.

The Blackpool hip hop community could not have been more welcoming, and they really made everyone feel right at home. The hometown breakin crew, Freefly Crew and the Studio, House of Wingz came together to put on an event on the Friday evening, which had such a vibe and everyone really enjoyed this event. We saw the one and only bboy Pocket and he had the whole room up on their feet cheering and shouting in excitement, to see one of the world’s best powermovers throwdown. The battles were amazing and Clean North performed especially well. For the 2v2 battles they had two pairs within the semi final and Bgirl Labyrinth and Jonah One made it to the final, showing that real Bradford style. Freefly and House of Wingz also performed on stage at Breakin Convention and had the whole crowd happy and enjoying the show. Blackpool is definitely a place with such a creative and brewing dance scene and we cannot wait to visit again.

The next day we took some time to enjoy the local attractions of Blackpool and see the sights. We went to the famous Pleasure Beach and had an amazing time which will be in our memoires for a very long time. Thank God that through our work, we were able to experience such incredible performances, meet world class dancers and find the inspiration we need to push our own artform. Clean North have only just begun the R&D phase and they have achieved so much already. For many of the Bradford bboys and bgirls on this trip, this was a life changing experience and hopefully will be the first of many.
