This was an incredible programme for Tech Styles International and the bboys, bgirls and communities we work with across Bradford. When we first set out the initial ideas and plans for this project, it was something we had never done before but we knew it would have major benefits for the local breakin scene and would have the potential to change the lives of those who were involved. Artist in Residence programmes happen often in other artforms but with breakin/hip hop this is something which is very rare.

Artist in Residence programmes, usually involve a prominent artist immersing themselves in a different place/environment, usually in connection with a dance company, school or theatre. In terms of dance, the artists often share and exchange, their dance skills, techniques, processes and knowledge for an extended period of time, anywhere from a single week or longer. The outcome can be to create new work, find inspiration, develop skills and much more.

The advantage for us was that we were able to think outside the box, in terms of the residence, with a fresh set of eyes and put our unique stamp on this type of project, to get the best benefit for our community. None of the breakers within Bradford, had experienced a programme like this before, and this included members of our organisation. We knew it would be a challenge but we wanted to push ourselves and take things to the next level.

Thank God, we are so happy that for the first of Break Create Pollinate, we had a truly amazing artist. This was non other than the legendary bboy Lil Tim from the UK. He has represented the culture for over 40 years and still has an inspirational passion and love for the dance that can be seen and felt. Lil Tim truly dedicated his time to this artist in residence programme, it was an amazing collaboration and exchange.

It was so encouraging to see bboys, bgirls and the Clean North Crew, wanting to show Lil Tim about the Bradford breakin culture and lifestyle. The week was full with breakin workshops, that took place at key locations around the city. We collaborated with Tranquil Productions to ensure Lil Tim was able to reach many people, he was able to visit many community centres and schools, as well as holding special open and private workshops. Lil Tim helped those in the early years, working with 3-6 year-olds, as well as leading masterclasses with some of the most experienced breakers in Bradford, and everything in-between.

To make things even better Lil Tim also has a vast knowledge of massage and is a specialist in dance movement. This meant he was able to give special consultations to the Clean North Crew and help them to understand their bodies even better. He assessed injuries, as well as directly treating them, he gave invaluable advice about how to recover and avoid injury in the future. This kind of help was amazing and he was able to assess over 8 people during Break Create Pollinate.

Another great achievement was that we were also able to run our first podcast interview, which will be released soon. It was great to hear about Lil Tim’s journey and his life within the dance and hip hop culture. This is something that will be shared digitally meaning it will be widely assessable to our supporters/followers and people all over the world, please make sure to follow our Instagram and Facebook to be notified when the interview is released.

We wanted to also celebrate Lil Tim as a bboy, an artist and for his presence and contributions to the UK and international scene. Director Lloyd ‘Tranquil’ Thompson took some incredible photos of Lil Tim in the studio and it was great to be able to mark this historic occasion for the Bradford breaking community. We also had Labyrinth taking photos throughout the week, she was able to capture some great moments and these photos are also featured throughout this post. Luke Hogan shot an amazing promo and thank you to Juncherre Beatz for the dope music, this promo really did capture many highlights of the week and it can be viewed below. We hope you enjoy looking at these photos and watching the promo.
