The Bradford breakin scene has been growing from strength to strength over the years. Every edition of Bradford Brawl keeps on getting better and better! Among the Bboys and Bgirls of Bradford, this Tranquil Productions internal event is a favourite in the course of the year. The dancers work hard all year round putting together their showcases and preparing for the battles. Everyone wants to be etched in Bradford breakin history by taking the win, but it all comes down to who performs best on the day. With Bradford Brawl 2024 fast approaching, let’s take a quick recap of what happened last year.
At Bradford Brawl 2023, we saw 6 showcases, along with amazing crew and 2v2 battles. Concrete Roses were the reigning champions from Bradford Brawl 2022, so they were definitely the crew to beat in 2023. Question was, who was going to do it? There was West Side Breakers, Bradford City Breakers and also the newly formed Windhill Clan hoping to take the crew title.
The battles were intense and everyone repped strong but the crew that came out on top was Concrete Roses! Making them BACK TO BACK champions in the crew battle category! Congratulations to these Bboys and Bgirls on their win. They represented strong throughout the entire event to take the victory. Winning two events in a row is no small task, but they were able to work hard as a team and execute their rounds well. It was great to see them set the bar and be an example to all the other breakers.
West Side Breakers (Alina and Theo) went up against Clean North Crew (Dexy & Elijah) in the finals of the 2v2s. This was a great battle with West Side Breakers taking the win. Congratulations to Alina and Theo! This was their first crew win, so it was amazing to see them reach new heights as a team.
The showcases were incredible with crews bringing theatrical elements to their performances. Each show definitely had its own feel to it. This makes us even more excited to see what’s next for this year’s event. Big shout out to Windhill Clan on their first ever showcase performance. Bgirl Spider did a great job training this crew in 2023 and they left us all with a great first impression.
Clean North Crew also performed a new piece at Bradford Brawl 2023. They had dedicated a lot of time to developing new techniques and skills in order to take their performances to higher levels, this particular showcase incorporated many theatre techniques and really pushed their boundaries. Clean North were very excited to perform the new piece in front of the home crowd! It was great for them to receive such a positive response from the show and the audience loved it.
Last year’s Bradford Brawl saw the introduction of our award ceremony. There were 5 awards given to different breakers across the Bradford scene who showcased various amazing things across the year and on the day. These awards were custom made by Trik09, an amazing graffiti artist, one of the UK’s finest. The Dark Horse aka Just Abbie won the ‘Dedication’ award. The passion award was given to Millie (Windhill Clan) and Milo took home the ‘Battle Cat’ award. Our ‘Training’ award was given to Idris (Concrete Roses). The final award was awarded through votes, and it was very exciting to see who would win. The audience of Bradford Brawl 2023 voted to decide who was the ‘Breakers Breaker’ and this was given to Bgirl Layla (West Side Breakers). Well done Layla, what an honourable award to receive.
We would also like to thank our amazing judges, Meaway (Payback Season), Bank-C (Bustamove) and Bgirl Fox (Clean North Crew). Bank-C also did an incredible job with the workshop in the morning, it was a great way to set off the day.
As you can see, last year’s event was incredible. However, we have a feeling Bradford Brawl 2024 is going to raise the bar even further! This year we have the legend Lil’ Tim joining us from London and we have Tobi (Recession Squad) coming from Ireland, who will also be hosting a workshop in the morning of the event from 11:00 – 12:00. Our third judge is none other than Clean North Crew’s Bgirl Fox. You don’t want to miss this!
We have a new crew on the block called Buttersmooth this year, along with High Crags Primary school who have been working with Bgirl Spider. That is a total of 7 showcases to look forward to, alongside the crew and the 2v2 battles. The energy is going to be through the roof. Will Concrete Roses come back and take the win for a THIRD year in a row, or will we be crowning new crew champions this year? Can West Side Breakers retain their 2v2 title? And for the first time in Bradford Brawl history, we will be doing the Showcase of The Year award! Who will be the first to take it?
