Early last year some members of the bboys and bgirls of Clean North Crew got to experience Bordeaux, France for the first time. Since coming back to the Bradford scene, they have shared many memories and experiences from the trip with the rest of the crew and the younger generation of breakers in the city. Only a year later, they were blessed to be returning with Tech Styles International with two extra members of the crew! The Trocke Dance Battle event alongside the Bordeaux hip hop scene made a massive impact on the crews mentality and approach to training and lifestyle, so much so that everyone felt excited to have another opportunity to go.
Getting off the plane in the airport for Bboy Tranquil, Jonah and Bgirl Ammo, Labyrinth and Spider was nostalgic but also as exciting as the first time, as they now got to share their favourite parts of the trip with new comers Stylez and Abbie! Throughout the weekend, they returned to many beloved food spots such as the Les Halles Bacalan ( food market), La Toque Cuivree (Canele shop) and Pizza Capri. The delicious food all weekend long provided the crew with great energy that just added to the incredible sights and vibe that the city has. On the first night whilst exploring the city centre, Clean North found an amazing spot to cypher in. Surrounded by the unique architecture and an old style shopping centre, all the members were able to get down and dance together. This was a great feeling and moment as for Bgirl Abbie, it was her first time battling and travelling abroad and this was a great first night, filled with breakin and sight-seeing.
The morning of the event, the crew had a nutritious and varied breakfast supplied by the Moxy Hotel and then headed to the venue. Bgirl Labyrinth and Ammo entered the 2v2 category as well as Spider and Abbie. Jonah One, Tranquil and Stylez all entered the 1v1 footwork battle. 2024 has definitely brought a new energy for the crew in training and this was shown in the battles on the day. Everyone showcased their individual style and signatures, representing Bradford to the fullest. Big shoutout to Bboy Tranquil who made it to the semi-finals and lost in a close battle to Last Squad member Bboy Zitoun. Aswell as battling, the crew got to watch, meet and reconnect with many breakers from Bordeaux at the event such as Immigrandz Crew who had previously visited Bradford for Tech Styles 8 in November. They won the B.Tactical™ crew battle at the event and represented Bordeaux to the fullest. It was also great to make some new connections with international breakers who had travelled to battle and judge: Bgirl Ayu (Good Foot Crew, Japan), Bboy Diaz and Amir (Predatorz Crew) and an amazing bboy their new friend Jomi from Venezuela.
The after party once again hosted by Immigrandz at the Walky Bar was incredible. It was a great way for dancers to connect further outside of the Trocke event. The music selection brought heaps of energy to the floor, creating a very memorable night for all. Bordeaux and the surrounding cities have a lot of successful crews and individuals who are doing amazing all across the world and this is no accident. It is due to the lifestyle they live, the way that they train, the food they eat and the close connections they have with one another. Members of Clean North who came last year spoke about these different factors and it is without a doubt true. The culture and creativity surrounding hip hop in France, really is something special.
For many members of the crew, this was the first battle they had hit in 2024 so representing well was key. When the event was over and Sunday came around, everyone was able to just appreciate and reflect on where they were and how things came to be. The city was beautiful and the sun was shining. It was an amazing way to end another great trip. Often after big battles and connecting with new people is when Bgirl Ammo feels is the most important time to reflect on your own training, lifestyle and values.
After this year’s trip, the crew picked up training techniques and methods, learnt even more about the importance of food and what makes a true crew. Overall, the crew had an unforgettable time and Bordeaux has a vibrant, competitive but welcoming scene that stands out in the breakin community due to the crews and individuals who are working hard to ensure the hip-hop culture is passed on to the next generation.
